With the recent slump in the economy and the increase in the cost of living, there are many people having a difficult time making ends meet. As well, due to the rising costs of home heating fuel and electricity, many people are now finding it difficult paying to keep warm this winter. Although home heating costs are high, there are a number of ways you can reduce your winter heating costs. One important way to save money on your home heating costs is to winterize your home.

Below are a number of tips to winterizing your home:
Thermostat Improvements: For each degree that you lower your thermostat, you will save approximately 3% on your heating costs. Therefore, it pays to keep your thermostat at a lower and consistent temperature. When you are away from your home, lower the thermostat to 13 degrees instead of turning it completely off. As well, buy a programmable thermostat.
Prevent Heat Escape: There are a number of things you can do to keep the heat in and the cold out. Insulate your wall spaces, basement, and attic. Seal the windows and doors with caulking or weather stripping. As well, cover your windows using a window insulation kit containing sheets of plastic that provide a protective barrier from the outside cold. Keep the curtains open during the day to let the sun shine in and keep them closed at night. Also, for rooms that are not used, keep the doors closed so only the essential rooms and spaces are heated. If you have a fireplace, keep the fireplace damper closed.
Energy Efficient Devices and Appliances: If you are in the market for a new furnace, consider buying a mid or high efficiency furnace. You can save up to 40% on your home fuel bill. If you are not buying a new furnace, have your furnace and ducts cleaned. As well, make sure you change or clean the filters periodically. Check the floor registers to make sure they are not blocked. Buying energy efficient appliances will reduce power costs. Whenever possible, reduce the amount of hot water you use. There are government rebates and programs available for people who make energy efficient changes in their home. Energy efficient light bulbs are also a good energy saving choice.
Add Warmth: When you are spending time indoors, add an extra layer of clothing and put an extra blanket on the bed. Keeping yourself warm will reduce the urge to turn up the thermostat. Also, placing a rug on exposed floors will act as insulation.
One of the best ways to pay for heating bills during the winter is to set money aside each month in a home heating savings account before the cold arrives. When your first home heating bill arrives, you will be happy you have the money to pay the bill. Although heating costs are now very high, when you winterize your home, you can reduce your home heating and electricity bills. It will not cost that much and you will definitely enjoy the savings.
